best ps5 router

Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has skyrocketed to being one of the most popular gaming consoles on the market today. As of February 2023, the PS5 has sold more than 32 million units, making it possibly the fastest-selling console.

Gaming consoles have always been the target of hackers; something that Sony has learned the hard way more than once during the product lifecycle of the PlayStation. If you are connected to the internet through a gaming platform and have uploaded your banking information—online thieves will always try to take advantage of poor encryption to steal information.

FlashRouters wants to ensure that your PlayStation 5 gaming and streaming experience is as fluid and safe as possible. That’s why we offer the fastest Sony PS5 routers and the most powerful PS5 routers on the market.

Introducing the Sony PlayStation 5

The PS5 is Sony’s most advanced gaming console yet with support for 4K UHD Blu-ray, and the ability to play games up to 8K resolution (as well as 4K games at 120Hz). The PS5 is available in two variants; one with an internal 4K Blu-ray drive, and one as a digital-only console.

What’s New on the PS5?

The PS5’s new shape also demands vertical positioning which might be a problem for some users who were hoping to hide it inside a media console. On the plus side, there is a slick new UI that is significantly easier to navigate. Launch times on the PS5 are much quicker and connection to a high-speed internet connection will hasten how quickly you can begin gameplay.

Sony has upgraded to the super-fast NVMe SSD and a more powerful GPU that will enable higher frame rates and ray tracing. The built-in microphone on the controller is an interesting addition.

The new design has two noticeable improvements that we think have enormous value—improved ventilation to keep the console cool during intense gameplay, and a quieter internal mechanism so the console itself makes less sound.

In terms of ports, the front of the PS5 has a USB-A and USB-C port, while the back sports two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.1, an Ethernet port, and a power port. Unlike Apple products that often feature proprietary ports that can only work with their own cables, Sony has kept it simple and universal.

Users will find that games introduced for the PS4 will work just fine on the PS5, but older games will not.

Does PS5 Support Streaming?

Out of the box, you’ll get support for most major streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, and Apple TV, as well as a few of the smaller platforms like Twitch, Funimation, NFL Sunday Ticket, ESPN, Vudu, Tubi, WWE Network and Crunchyroll.

One thing we noticed is that not all of these apps will be available to stream in 4K/HDR. Netflix and Amazon Prime are, but it doesn’t look like Disney+ or Apple TV offer 4K/HDR streaming at this time on the PS5.

If you were hoping for support for Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision, prepare to be disappointed. Sony has introduced its own Atmos-like format for its games called Tempest 3D Audio but we’re not quite convinced that it offers the same level of immersion as Dolby Atmos.

Unlike the new Xbox, Sony has introduced the PS5 with a plethora of dazzling titles that should keep gamers busy for the first few months including Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Resident Evil Village, and Demon’s Souls. All the trailers can be found on the PlayStation YouTube channel.

Sony PS5 Specs and Availability

The good news is that the Sony PS5 is available. However, finding one during the holiday season is becoming next to impossible. Big box retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, and Costco have struggled to keep the $500 console in stock. If you’re not willing to wait and have the money to spend, there are people selling new, unopened PS5 consoles for $1,500 online.

Sony has invested millions in the development of the new console and the recently released specs explain why this console will be capable of offering such a huge step-up in performance.

How Can a Router Affect Your PS5 Experience?

Selecting the right router for your PS5 is not as easy as you might think. The console represents a significant improvement in processing power, speed, load times, and frame rate/resolution. Fortunately, FlashRouters offers a line of devices ready to handle any amount of gaming or streaming.

FlashRouters offers routers that are designed to best any competitor in terms of compatibility, power, and versatility. In order to accomplish that, we flash all of our routers with DD-WRT firmware.

This replacement firmware is perfect for a PlayStation 5 user. Features include advanced security options – to offer extra protection for interactive gaming, Wi-Fi range extension, and control over how your bandwidth is allocated. You’ll definitely want to prioritize your PlayStation 5 with a PS5 Router, as gaming and streaming are big bandwidth hogs.

Open source FlashRouters also provide all kinds of NAT and Port Forwarding controls that work consistently, unlike many manufacturers’ firmware which offer limited settings and functionality. There is an excellent Playstation Forum post that provides a truly in-depth look at port forwarding, NAT, and the importance of a router in your Playstation gaming experience.

An open-source FlashRouter offers you greater control over your internet stability and bandwidth that you cannot get from a device straight from Best Buy or Target. Plus, we actually include one-on-one US-based remote customer support to make sure your network performs optimally for the best PlayStation 5 gaming experience.

How Else Can I Improve My PlayStation 5 Experience?

Now that you’re hooked up your gaming battle station to a powerful FlashRouter, you’re ready to conquer the worlds beyond. However, can I further improve my PS5 experience, you may be asking? Yes, you can!

As we mentioned above, the PS5 connects to your favorite streaming services, like Netflix, NBC Peacock, and more. While that is awesome, it can be a little bit of a downer when you were looking forward to watching a show on Netflix only to find it unavailable in your area. How can you fix that? Use a VPN, of course!

Unblock Streaming on Your PS5 with a VPN

A VPN, or virtual private network, is a service that lets you encrypt your Internet connection and circumvent various restrictions while keeping your information secure.

This is done by routing your Internet connection and data to a secure VPN server, typically located in a different country. This allows your computer to appear as if it was virtually in any country, effectively preventing geo-blocking.

After your Internet connection reaches the VPN server, the VPN server then directs your connection to the website or service you’re trying to access. These websites and services only see your VPN connection rather than your personal home connection. Meaning, if that show you really wanted to watch is only available in the UK, you can set your geolocation to the UK and watch til your heart’s content!

The best part is, with a FlashRouter you can easily add a VPN onto your PS5. While the PS5 doesn’t support VPN configuration onto the Playstation directly, connecting your PS5 to a VPN-configured FlashRouter extends the VPN network onto the Playstation, unlocking a whole new world of streaming opportunities for you!

Is There a PlayStation 5 Pro In The Works?

While there has been no official word from Sony, independent sources are claiming that Sony is developing a PS 5 Pro edition of the console. Very likely, the console would offer upgraded specs and features. According to rumors, the console may be available as early as late 2023 or early 2024.

The move would not be a departure from Sony. The company previously launched a Pro version of the PS4 in 2017, 3 years after the launch of the original PS4 console.
