How to Replace a Router Without Reconnecting Every Smart Device

The fastest router migration is usually not a weekend of resetting bulbs. It is making the new network look familiar to devices—without carrying old security mistakes forward.

Short answer: configure the new router with the exact same Wi-Fi network name (SSID), password and compatible security mode before switching. Most devices will reconnect automatically. Keep the old router powered off once the new one is broadcasting.

Why the same Wi-Fi name and password works

Wi-Fi devices save a network profile. If the new router presents matching credentials and a security mode the device supports, the device can often join without being set up again. Google’s own Nest guidance recommends reusing the old SSID and password for an easier router replacement.

The match must be exact. Capitalization, spaces and punctuation count.

Before unplugging the old router

  1. Record the exact SSID and password for every active band or guest network.
  2. Note the security mode: WPA2, WPA3 or a transition/mixed mode.
  3. Export or photograph important settings: reserved IP addresses, port forwards, DNS choices, parental controls and VPN policies.
  4. List devices that rely on a 2.4 GHz-only onboarding process.
  5. Confirm the new router’s LAN subnet if printers, storage or home automation use fixed addresses.

The lowest-friction cutover

  1. Configure the new router while the old router’s Wi-Fi is off, or use a temporary wired connection.
  2. Enter the old SSID and password exactly.
  3. Choose a compatible security mode. WPA2/WPA3 transition mode may be useful during migration when older devices cannot use WPA3.
  4. Power down the old router completely.
  5. Connect the modem or ONT to the new router, then restart the modem/ONT if required by the provider.
  6. Give devices several minutes to rediscover the network before resetting anything.
Do not run both routers with the same SSID at the same time. Devices may attach to the wrong access point, switch unpredictably or appear online while sitting on the old network.

Why a few devices still refuse to connect

The security mode changed

An older plug or camera may understand WPA2 but not WPA3-only security. Use the most secure mode supported by the devices you are keeping; isolate legacy equipment on a dedicated IoT network or a router with manageable device groups when possible.

The device expects 2.4 GHz during setup

Some apps struggle when the phone is on 5 or 6 GHz while the accessory only uses 2.4 GHz. A temporary 2.4 GHz onboarding network or separate IoT SSID can help.

The local address changed

A printer or home server may reconnect to Wi-Fi but receive a different IP address. Recreate DHCP reservations instead of repeatedly assigning addresses by hand.

The device saved more than Wi-Fi credentials

Cloud-linked systems, mesh nodes and vendor hubs can retain router-specific state. Reconnect these individually only after the simple migration path has had time to work.

What not to preserve

Keeping a network identity is not the same as cloning every old choice. Replace weak passwords, obsolete encryption, unnecessary port forwards and abandoned guest networks. If changing the password is overdue, accept that devices will need to be reconnected and use the migration as a clean security reset.

A practical rollback plan

Keep the old router unplugged but intact for several days. If a critical device fails, you can briefly restore the old setup to inspect its settings. Never leave both routers broadcasting the same network name during troubleshooting.

Bottom line

For most homes, the cleanest router replacement is a controlled identity transfer: exact SSID, exact password, compatible security and only one router broadcasting. Migrate deliberate settings, leave obsolete ones behind and reset individual devices only when the easier path fails.
