Router Security Checklist for 2025

Router Security Checklist for 2025

A step-by-step guide to securing your Wi-Fi, blocking tracking, and protecting every device in your home.

Your router is the cornerstone of home security—but also the most overlooked device. This checklist walks you through essential steps to harden your network, stop data leaks, and protect your family from modern threats.

1. Update Your Router Firmware Regularly

Firmware updates patch vulnerabilities, improve Wi-Fi stability, and block zero-day exploits before attackers can target your network.

  • Check for updates at least once a month.
  • Enable automatic updates if your router supports it.
  • Avoid discontinued models that no longer receive patches.
Pro tip: FlashRouters devices ship VPN-ready and curated so you aren’t stuck on abandoned, insecure firmware.

2. Change Default Router Logins

Default login credentials are the first thing automated attacks try. If you’re still using the username and password printed on the router label, your network is at risk.

  • Change the default admin username.
  • Use a unique 16+ character password.
  • Disable remote admin access unless you absolutely need it.
  • Store the new credentials securely in a password manager.

3. Use Encrypted DNS or Threat Protection

DNS is like your network’s search history. By default, your ISP and many apps can see every domain you visit. Switching to encrypted DNS or a VPN’s threat-protection DNS stops easy tracking.

  • NordVPN Threat Protection DNS
  • Cloudflare (1.1.1.1)
  • AdGuard DNS
  • NextDNS

4. Isolate Smart Home & IoT Devices

Smart TVs, speakers, cameras, and budget IoT gadgets are chatty—and often poorly secured. Treat them as “high-risk” devices on your network.

Good: Put smart home devices on a separate guest Wi-Fi network.
Better: Run them behind a VPN router so their traffic is encrypted and harder to profile.

5. Disable Risky Router Features

Turn off any setup convenience features that quietly weaken your security.

  • WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
  • UPnP, unless a specific application requires it
  • Telnet / SSH access, unless you use them intentionally
  • Remote administration from outside your home
  • Legacy encryption modes (WEP, WPA, TKIP)

6. Add a VPN Router for Network-Wide Encryption

A VPN router encrypts traffic from every device on your network—phones, laptops, game consoles, smart TVs, IoT, and kids’ devices—without relying on individual VPN apps.

  • Hide your real IP address from ISPs, apps, and streaming services.
  • Prevent cross-device tracking and profiling.
  • Protect devices that can’t run VPN apps on their own.

Popular options include Privacy Hero 2, Flint 3, and our latest Asus Wi-Fi 7 VPN routers for maximum speed and coverage.

7. Run a Quarterly Network Security Audit

Schedule a quick security check-in every three months. It takes less than 20 minutes and keeps small issues from turning into serious problems.

  • Update router firmware and all major devices.
  • Review the list of devices connected to your Wi-Fi.
  • Remove old or unknown devices from the network.
  • Rotate your admin password and Wi-Fi passphrase.
  • Verify your VPN router is connected and protecting traffic.
  • Confirm DNS settings still use your chosen secure provider.
