The future is here with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E and FlashRouters has the catalog to embrace it. Learn why this new Wi-Fi standard will take your network to the next level.
A Brief History of Wi-Fi Networking Standards
Wi-Fi networking standards are the frameworks that determine how routers and internet-connected devices exchange data with each other. These standards are overseen and approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
One of the most monumental standards was Wi-Fi 5, also known as Wireless-AC or 802.11ac. First introduced in 2013, it reigned supreme until the Wi-Fi Alliance approved a new, more powerful generation of Wi-Fi—Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6 estimated capable speeds of 9.6 Gbps, a significant upgrade from 3.5 Gbps (Wi-Fi 5).
What Makes Wi-Fi 6 Better Than Wi-Fi 5?
Speed is one of the main advantages of Wi-Fi 6 over all the earlier Wi-Fi standards. In ideal circumstances, Wi-Fi 6 offers a roughly 50% performance boost over Wi-Fi 5. It also has better signal encoding that allows the transfer of more data in a single transmission, resulting in further speed improvements.
When it comes to interconnected devices, Wi-Fi 6 has a greater capacity. It can also support larger data transmission to multiple devices connected to the network all at the same time, without affecting the quality of connection that each device experiences.
In crowded areas like malls or airports, Wi-Fi is known to be hard to connect due to very poor signal. Wi-Fi 6 has provided a solution to this problem with the use of the orthogonal frequency division multiple access or OFDMA technology. This is a significant improvement over the OFDM technology used in Wi-Fi 5.
What Makes Wi-Fi 6E Better Than Wi-Fi 6?
In 2020, the Wi-Fi Alliance released an update of the Wi-Fi 6 standard called Wi-Fi 6E. Despite its similar-sounding name, Wi-Fi 6E offers extensive improvements, most notably access to the 6 GHz spectrum.
Since Wi-Fi was first introduced, Wi-Fi devices operated in 583 MHz of spectrum. As more and more devices enter that space and begin communicating with each other, it results in interference. Wi-Fi 6E adds an additional 1200 MHz of spectrum.
What Does More Wi-Fi 6E Spectrum Mean for Users?
Imagine a highway that has two lanes—with each lane going in an opposite direction. With 2.4GHz and 5 GHz bands, any and all devices share that one lane. So, if there’s an especially slow car that holds up traffic, it’ll slow down how fast everything is going.
With the 6 GHz band, that’s no longer a concern. The 6GHz adds an additional two lanes to each side of the highway. These new lanes only allow “new cars” to travel back and forth. That means they’re ultra-fast. That means that bandwidth-heavy processes won’t slow down your whole network.
Does Wi-Fi 6E Improve Throughput Capabilities?
Yes! With Wi-Fi 6E and the 6GHz band, users unlock more than twice as much bandwidth as they do with Wi-Fi 6 on the 5GHz band.
First off, expands the number of 160 MHz channels from three to seven. These channels can process data more efficiently, which means better performance.
Secondly, the 6 GHz band offers much more continuous coverage. On the 5GHz band, users could not access the spectrum from 5330 MHz to 5490 Mhz. In effect, that knocked down the number of possible 160 MHz channels from three to two. With Wi-Fi 6E, there’s continuous coverage along the 1.2 GHz of spectrum available.
