Preakness Results and Belmont Information
While the intrigue of a Triple Crown possibility ended with Rombauer’s wild come-from-behind victory over favorites Medina Spirit and Midnight Bourbon, things are not so simple behind the scenes. Due to lingering concerns over the failed drug test of Medina Spirit, horse trainer Bob Baffert has been suspended from entering horses at any New York racetrack, including Belmont Park.
The Belmont Stakes remains the longest and oldest Triple Crown race at 1.5 miles. Having first been held in 1867, this will be the 153rd running at Belmont Park. While the purse at the first running of the Belmont Stakes was a mere $2,500, the winner this year will take home $800,000 of a $1.5 million purse. In 1973, Secretariat, possibly the most famous to win the Belmont, took home $90,120 in an incredible showing.

Made up of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes horse races, the Triple Crown is a grueling test of endurance, strength, and speed. Only those who win all three races become Triple Crown winners. Horses who run the Triple Crown races are (mostly) three-year-old thoroughbreds. Since all three races began, thirteen horses have won the Triple Crown, most recently Justify in 2018.

The race for the triple Crown neighed off with the Kentucky Derby. As of publication, Medina Spirit is still considered the winner as described above, but his win may be vacated. It is unclear if that will occur before or after the Preakness is run, but time will tell.
