It was over two-and-a-half years ago that we wrote about the dangers of WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), and while we don’t want to pat ourselves on the back too aggressively, it would seem our warnings have been proven right.

Hackers Use WPS to Break WiFi Routers

According to VPN Creative, the Swiss Security Firm, Oxcite, has released some research that shows that routers with certain chipsets enable hackers to skip right past the supposed protection of WPS. This could potentially affect a great deal of Broadcom routers, as well as another company that went unnamed by Oxcite.

WPS-enabled routers have always been vulnerable to attacks, but until this recent report, would-be hackers had to devote at least a few hours and a whole lot of whittling down to their work. Not so anymore. A little bit of offline work and one guess and you’re in.

So what should you do about this? It’s quite simple, really. Go to your ROUTER SETUP PAGE and disable WPS.
