Among their many virtues, FlashRouters devices feature high RAM (Random Access Memory) speeds. Take one look at the FlashRouters that make up our bestsellers lists and you’ll see plenty of devices offering best-in-class RAM. RAM allows you to access any byte of memory randomly, without traveling through the previous byte. FlashRouters prioritizes RAM in our devices because users require the most responsive RAM to give them the most responsive wireless network.

All that said, today we’re not talking about RAM in general. Rather, we’ll focus on a specific version called NVRAM and demonstrate how it helps your network run.

What Is NVRAM?

First of all, the technical answer. NVRAM is short for “Non-Volatile Random Access Memory”. Got that?

So what makes the difference between normal RAM and Non-Volatile RAM? Because NVRAM is non-volatile, the memory is stored on your device whether the power is on or off. Basically, the startup configuration of your computer depends on NVRAM, because a lack of NVRAM means a lack of stored settings. So when you turn off your computer or printer or router and turn it back on, it’s NVRAM that brings your permanent settings back to life.

NVRAM is associated with flash memory because flash is also a non-volatile form of memory. So if you’ve transferred files from one device to another using a jump drive (which operates on flash memory), then you have NVRAM to thank.

The Benefits of Powerful NVRAM

To start with, NVRAM is considerably faster than volatile memory. That’s why NVRAM is the memory of choice for antilock braking systems. If you need a computerized action to kick in quickly, NVRAM is what you need.

Better yet, NVRAM doesn’t require as much power, as it’s not dependent on moving parts. That’s why you can depend on it to last.

NVRAM Downsides

Honestly, the bad isn’t really that bad in the case of NVRAM. In the past, NVRAM’s main issue was that a lot of its applications, like jump drives, were battery-powered. Batteries kept low levels of power running to your devices so that startup settings were never erased. But batteries require replacement, and too many rewrites on a flash-memory-based device would eventually cause the device to deteriorate.

Fortunately, the technology has improved, and stronger forms of NVRAM with more durable batteries have largely replaced the old. Versions of NVRAM like Ferroelectric RAM (FeRAM) and Magneto resistive RAM (MRAM) make information storage considerably more reliable.

As mentioned above, FlashRouters places a premium on devices with powerful levels of RAM. Check out some of our top-performing wireless routers, and experience how a network’s memory can vastly improve your connectivity and performance.
