Here at FlashRouters, we pride ourselves on being a U.S. based company. Despite the ubiquity of outsourcing IT jobs overseas, the FlashRouters Sales, Support, and Shipping Teams are all exclusively based in the United States.
With this in mind, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the brave men and women who make up the U.S. Armed Forces. Deployed military service members make up a significant portion of our customer base. As a result, providing VPN access to members of branches of the military is one of our most valued services.
VPN For Deployed Military Service Members
VPN is an acronym for Virtual Private Network. A Virtual Private Network filters an Internet connection through a remote server and back. Tunneling between servers encrypts the connection. It also changes the appearance of a user’s geo-location. For example, if you are at a military base in Germany but are interested in viewing American streaming content, selecting a stateside VPN server will open the door to accessing geo-blocked content.
While it is possible to set up a site-to-site connection between two private servers, the most popular option for VPN access for members of the military abroad is subscribing to a paid service. Many of our military customers have found great success using one of the following services:
PER MONTH
- 1700+ Servers across 60+ countries
- Integrates with the Tor anonymity network
PER MONTH
- Servers in 70+ countries
- Port Forwarding, DDoS protection, and Dedicated IP Available as Add-ons
Army VPN Access With a FlashRouter for Military Personnel
Subscribing to a VPN service is a great way for troops stationed around the world to access geo-blocked American content. However, many streaming devices, like Smart TVs, game consoles, and media players have no native VPN support. The only way to take advantage of a VPN on one of these devices is to connect it to an encrypted network from an Open Source router.
Factory firmware is frequently laden with backdoors and bugs. Flashing a router with Open Source firmware voids these issues. Moreover, flashing also allows the router to serve as a gateway to a user’s VPN server of choice. With this setup, any device connected to the router, wired or wirelessly, will be encrypted by the VPN connection. This is the case whether or not the device has native VPN support.
Using the example from above, if you are located at a military base in Germany and want to watch U.S. Netflix on your Xbox One, you will be geo-blocked. And, since Xbox does not support VPNs natively, it is impossible to connect the Xbox to a VPN directly. However, connecting the Xbox to a FlashRouter, configured with a VPN, will change its geo-location and unlock Netflix (or another streaming service) from abroad.
