When you put a URL into your internet browser, your computer doesn’t actually know how to get there. It uses a Domain Name Server (DNS) to look up the numeric IP address to determine how to get to the page you want. In a way, it’s very similar to when people used to use the white pages or call information to find out a person’s phone number.
If the server you are using becomes slow to respond, simple things like browsing the web become a pain. By default, you are likely using the DNS server of your internet provider. They could force every URL you try to access to display whatever they want, like ad banners around every page. A common example of this is when connecting your phone to Wi-Fi in a store or hotel. You’re often required to agree to terms before you can actually access the internet—that’s because of their DNS!
Use DNS Benchmark To Find a Better Server!
Thankfully, you can change the DNS server that your network uses and speed things up! Obviously, everyone is in a different location, which makes it impossible to say that any one DNS server is best. The best way to determine the best name server to use is DNS Benchmark!
Their easy-to-use, free program will run a simple test on your internet connection and offer not only the best DNS servers to use but also other tips to enhance your internet connection. Once downloaded, all you have to do is click the “Nameservers” tab and click “Run Benchmark.” When the test is over, you can view their findings in the “Conclusions” tab.

How to Change the DNS Server on Your Router
Switching your DNS on a FlashRouter is easy (Note: Always make a backup of your current settings before making changes in your router):
- Log into your router
- Navigate to Setup=>Basic Setup
- Scroll down to Network Address Server Settings (DHCP)
- Enter the name servers you would like to use into Static DNS fields 1,2, and 3.
- Click Apply Settings
- Power Cycle your FlashRouter by turning it off, waiting 20 seconds, and then turning it back on again.
